SIRTF Circles the Sun

August 2002: This new visualization shows SIRTF as it orbits the Sun. The innovative "heliocentric" orbit, which SIRTF will assume during its January 2003 launch, gets the heat-sensitive telescope away from the ever-present warmth of the Earth, allowing it to operate at a much colder temperature with less coolant than other telescopes as it drifts slowly away from home in an Earth-trailing orbit.
